If you neither want to wear a tie nor an ascot, the bow tie is a great companion for morning dress. It is equally as correct as a tie and can look quite stunning.

Bow Tie with Polka Dots & Stiff Detachable Collar with a Morning Coat
Of course, the character of the bow tie should be rather formal and hence it should be made out of silk rather than wool or other more casual fibers.
Traditionally, the Lipton Tie – a blue bow tie with white polka dots named after tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton – has been very popular with formal daywear, and personally I must say that it always looks fantastic. Alternatively, houndstooth patterns could look dapper too. As long as you do not add flashy colors such as bright pink, I think you can create an extraordinary outfit.
Despite our massive picture and illustration archive I had to search a bit for morning coat outfits with bow ties. Obviously, there were very few men back in the day who would actually wear them but the one’s who did were very likely immaculately dressed people because the dresscode rules were much stricter than today and they were educated enough to dress in a special way.
Today, I think the situation has not changed very much. There are not many men who wear morning coats anymore and the ones who do are usually quite educated. Nevertheless, most will probably wear a standard neck tie with it and only very few won’t shy away from a bow tie.
So, if you happen to rent a morning coat that does not fit properly, skip the bow tie and just go with a regular tie because otherwise you may end up look more funny than properly dressed.
Just like with regular bow ties, we strongly suggest to wear only self tie bow ties because you can add a little character to the bow. On the other hand, ready-made bow ties often look perfect and hence reveal their nature quite obviously.
How to Tie a Bow Tie?
Most do not know how to tie a bow tie although it is the same knot you do when you tie your shoe. Of course, once you are supposed to tie the knot on your neck with a piece of silk, things appear a little more difficult. You just have to practice a few times and I promise you, eventually you get much better. If you have never tied a bow tie before, start tying it around your thigh using the following instruction. Once you master that, start practicing on your collar.
