The socks should be worn over the calf, unless you are a fan of sock suspenders. Personally, I infinitely prefer over the calf socks that stay up to sock garters, but each to his own. Short socks without suspenders are not really an option, because exposing one’s hairy leg ruins the overall elegant effect of morning dress. Classic choices for daywear hosiery are black or charcoal socks made of silk or cashmere, in subtle patterns such as herringbone or houndstooth ; clocks are also a nice choice. Considering the advancements in the cotton and wool fiber industry over the last half a century, I think silk-cotton or silk-wool blend are just fine for formal morning wear because the new machines can knit so finely that you will get an elegant, thin, shiny sock with these materials that are more durable. Also, you will get nicer clocks and patterns because silk is usually rather thin. Apart from that subtle polka dots or shadow stripe can look fantastic with striped morning trousers. However, if you are a hardcore traditionalist, pure silk is the way to go.
